What nobody considers when choosing a ceiling extractor

When designing a kitchen with an island, a ceiling extractor is often the preferred option.

You are looking for minimalism, spaciousness and clean lines. You check the technical specifications, review the extraction capacity… and assume everything is ready.

However, the success of a ceiling hood is not determined solely by the catalogue. It depends on the architecture of the kitchen itself. If you are planning your next project, there are four key factors that almost everyone overlooks, and they can make all the difference.

1. The expansion cone: forget the “same size” myth

The most common mistake is choosing an extractor with the same width as the cooktop and aligning them perfectly. While it may look symmetrical, it does not work that way in practice.

Smoke and steam do not rise in a straight line; they spread outwards in the shape of an inverted cone. They are also extremely sensitive to cross air currents (air conditioning, people walking through the space, etc.).

The smartest solution: Keep the extractor centred for visual balance, but oversize it. If your cooktop is 80 cm wide, your ceiling extractor should ideally be at least 100 or 120 cm wide. This ensures an effective capture area without compromising the symmetry of the design.

2. Back pressure physics: the duct matters more than the motor

Most people measure the false ceiling to ensure the motor fits physically, but very few plan the duct route properly.

If a powerful motor has to push air through a duct that is too long, contains too many 90° bends or has a reduced diameter (for example, going from 150 mm to 120 mm), it ends up compromising its own performance.

The back pressure effect: Air encounters resistance, slows the motor down and creates internal turbulence. The result? The hood extracts half as efficiently and generates twice the noise level promised in the technical specifications.

The golden rule: Keep ductwork as short, straight and smooth as possible. Always use aerodynamic bends, avoid sharp right angles and, above all, never reduce the duct diameter simply to adapt to an existing installation.

3. Real acoustic comfort: remote motors

In kitchens connected to living areas, silence is essential. No matter how efficient an extractor may be, if the motor is located directly above your head in the ceiling while you are having dinner, you will still hear it.

One of the major advantages of some Frecan extraction systems is the possibility of separating the motor from the extractor body.

Move the motor away from the social area: The extraction unit remains seamlessly integrated into the kitchen ceiling, while the motor can be installed remotely in a hallway ceiling, utility room or even on the roof or exterior façade. The result is a dramatically quieter kitchen environment.

4. Plasma recirculation: the solution that saves your ceiling

In many urban renovations or design-led apartments, routing ductwork to the exterior is technically difficult without affecting the building façade or lowering ceilings excessively.

Today, plasma technology completely changes the rules compared to traditional activated carbon filters.

Up to 98% purified air: Plasma filters clean the air at a molecular level, removing smoke, odours, grease, allergens and bacteria before returning clean air to the room. Because no external ducting is required, you retain indoor climate control and significantly simplify the installation.

In summary

Before focusing solely on aesthetics, think like an engineer:

  • Width: Is the extractor larger than the cooktop to compensate for smoke expansion?
  • Ducting: Is the extraction route straight, smooth and free from restrictions?
  • Location: Can the motor be installed remotely to achieve near-silent operation?

Asking these questions early on is what separates a kitchen that simply looks good in photos from one that isy genuinely designed to be lived in.
